If Buried, Which Cemetery Will They be Buried at?

There are many reasons why Canadians choose burial. The same goes for choosing a cemetery. It can be a family or local tradition, for religious reasons, due to location, because of cost and, newly, because of availability. This can often be a part of a pre-planned or pre-arranged funeral service. If that is not the case, it is an important decision that has to be made. Here are some things to consider when choosing a cemetery.

What Goes Into Choosing a Cemetery?

For people who choose burial, it is not an uncommon practice for them to have purchased a plot in advance. This can be something they do with their spouse or even as an entire family. In these cases, a cemetery is predetermined by either family heritage or community tradition. However, there are numerous factors that can go into choosing a cemetery if the choice is entirely up to you. It is important to consider the location, is it in a place you and your family will be able to visit? You will also want to pick a cemetery that has the right policies because these will govern what you can and can’t do at that particular cemetery. Some cemeteries have rules that are more strict while others are quite liberal.

Location, Location, Location

Choosing a cemetery based on location is about personal preference. Some like to be buried where they grew up or where they were born. Other people wish to be buried where they spent their adult lives. One thing to think about here is where surviving family members will be residing and consider how important that is. It can be helpful for surviving loved ones to be able to come and visit the grave whenever they would like or on special occasions.

Find the Right Kind of Cemetery

Believe it or not, not all cemeteries are the same. Each type of cemetery is for a different demographic. Public cemeteries which are available to anyone and traditionally are owned privately. Religious cemeteries, in contrast, are owned by churches, other religious groups or by the community. Veterans cemeteries are saved for those who have served the country. There are also green cemeteries which dedicate themselves to environmentally conscious burial services.

Understand the Cost

Just like types of cemeteries, there are many different burial prices. In cemeteries that have a low vacancy, prices can be considerably higher due to demand. In addition, those with the option for burial in a mausoleum or other custom structure, prices can jump even higher. Nevertheless, burial is not always expensive and many funeral providers have found a way to make it more affordable. You can judge the value being provided by a cemetery for what is offered at what price. Funeral professionals can do this on your behalf and sometimes funeral homes actually own the cemetery.
